This precious telescope has taught us a lot about the universe. The Hubble Telescope has been spinning around our planet for quite a while, in fact it’s just celebrated it’s 30 th birthday. That means it spends its time floating in circles around the planet. The Hubble Telescope is in Earth’s orbit. Because it’s in space, we can’t look through it with our eyes, so it uses cameras to take pictures of what it sees. It’s about the size of a bus and it weighs as much as two elephants! It was made here on Earth and then launched into space. And then there’s space telescopes like Hubble. Or there are large telescopes inside observatories. You might have looked through a telescope before, they can be long tubes that you can hold and look through. One of the reasons we know just how beautiful space can be, is that something’s been out there, taking pictures for us! The Hubble Space Telescope! Telescopes make things that are faraway look closer, so you can see them in more detail. Even the galaxies beyond our home here in the Milky Way are awesome to look at. There are giant planets of swirling gas like Jupiter, or the perfectly smooth icy rings of Saturn. They raised more than $12,000 and the weight of the wool was 13.6kgs!
